The defense was bad, the bullpen was worse and the end result was another tough defeat.
Host Nebraska earned its first victory of the season, 8-5 over New Mexico on Saturday afternoon.
The Lobos (2-5) led 5-0 going into the bottom of the sixth when it all fell apart.
Kevin Baumgartner (0-1), who was originally scheduled to start Saturday before Friday's series opener was canceled, was in his second inning of relief when he gave up a leadoff walk to Rich Sanguinetti.
Austin Darby then reached on a fielder's choice, with Sanguinetti ending up safe at second base on an error by freshman Sam Haggerty. Chad Christensen then bunted his way on, and a throwing error by Baumgartner allowed both Sanguinetti and Darby scored.
Baumgartner got one out, but then gave up an RBI single to Pat Kelly, an RBI double to Kash Kalkowski and an RBI single to Blake Headley that tied the game 5-5.
Anthony Consiglio came on in relief of Baumgartner, but provided little. He ended up loading the bases on two walks and a fielder's choice with two outs, prompting the Lobos to turn to Tyler Spencer.
Darby promptly greeted him with a go-ahead two-run single to make it 7-5.
Nebraska (1-7) would tack on an insurance run in the eighth, but the Huskers' bullpen did the rest, retiring the last six Lobo batters in order.
UNM had gotten off to a strong start as D.J. Peterson hit a three-run homer in the first inning and starter A.J. Carman tossed four scoreless frames. No reason was given for why Carman was lifted prior to the fifth inning.
The Lobos will try to bounce back Sunday at 11:05 a.m. They will then return home for five games, starting with La Salle on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Isotopes Park.
