Waller Junior High

Most Houston cyclists took a couple of days off in January (unless they'd mounted their snow tires), but with "February" printed on the top line of the calendar it's time to buckle down. Yep, there's another weekend with two BP MS150 recommended training rides, starting with the Bulldog Bike Ride on Saturday, February 22 - bright and early, too.

You'll find courses of 25, 32 and 50 miles; all beginning at Waller Junior High School. The first wave rolls out at 8:00 a.m. Riders will cover familiar territory in Waller County north of Waller and Prairie View, covering lightly-traveled roads that you also see the Bluebonnet Ride and the Tour de Pink. Like most rides in the area of the Bayou City, you can expect a mostly flat course broken by occasional "rollers" and small stream crossings.

Proceeds of the Bulldog Ride benefit student activities at Waller Junior High. Grateful students and teachers will staff several rest stops along the way, and they'll serve a post-ride pancake feast for all

Registration is $35 per person until February 2 and $40 afterwards. Walk-up registration the day of the ride will set you back $45 is. On-line registration is available at until 6:00 p.m. on the 21st, or you can download a PDF or Word document of the registration form on the ride website and and mail it in or turn it in at the Cypress Bike Barn during packet pickup on the 19th. Riders who register early are guaranteed a ride tee, but it'll be first-come, first-shirted if you register on-site.

Details to remember: The Bulldog Bike Ride is a BP MS 150 recommended training ride. As with all MS150 recommended rides, safety rules will be enforced: helmets are required, headphones and earbuds are prohibited. SAG and medical support will be provided as well as staffed rest stops and course marshals.

Getting there: Waller is about 52 miles northwest of downtown Houston along US 290, the Northwest Freeway. Take US 290 (the Northwest Freeway) to the Field Store Road exit, Turn left to the old Waller ISD stadium, just south of 290 on your right (not the new stadium on Stokes Road). Park at the stadium for the start; on-site registration is in the junior high school gym.
