Osteoporosis is a bone disease that affects more than half of Americans age 50 and above. It is considered to be the second leading health care problem and although more common with increased age does not only affect the elderly. You may be at increased risk if you have certain health conditions such as endocrine or hormonal disorders, due to side effects of some prescription medications, poor diet or lack of exercise.

Hereditary or genetic factors also increase risk for some. Osteoporosis is considered a “silent” disease, meaning there are no early signs, but as it progresses you may experience chronic or severe pain, reduced mobility or increased risk of fractures.

Our bones are continuously growing during our lifetime and as part of this process, known as bone resorption, the bone is broken down by cells known as osteoclasts. The bone is then built up again by cells known as osteoblasts in a process called bone formation, but the levels of osteoblasts in our body peak around age 30 then decline.

This decline can lead to an imbalance of bone growth leaving spaces between the cells, which causes the bone to lose its strength and leads to osteoporosis. This can occur in both men and women, but is more prevalent in females, particularly after menopause. Fortunately, there are ways to slow down or prevent the effects of this disease.

There are different types of osteoporosis categorized as Primary Type 1, Primary type 2 or Secondary osteoporosis. Primary Type 1 is associated with women during and after menopause and could also be referred to as postmenopausal osteoporosis. The reduced functioning of hormones such as estrogen increase the risk of developing the bone disease as the rate of bone formation decreases.

Primary type 2, also known as senile osteoporosis, occurs between the ages of 70 and 75. Low calcium, low levels of Vitamin D or a zinc deficiency can lead to reduced bone formation just as the reduced level of function in estrogen for postmenopausal women. The last type, Secondary Osteoporosis, can occur at any age and is caused by certain health conditions. Once you are diagnosed with osteoporosis you have options for treatments, which your doctor will recommend.

One of the most common treatments is the use of prescription drugs, but there are other options such as surgery, lifestyle changes and pain management. As with anything there are side effects to these traditional treatment options; therefore, natural supplements are an alternative approach.
