The other day I had a question asked that was worth sharing and creating a conversation on. I was sitting at a local day spa and an entrepreneur asked me how to build a strong support team. Then she wanted to know the same thing about a service provider.
This is a great question especially today, we really want to know the person we work with will meet our needs and get the job done right the first time. So let's look at two ways to build your team; referrals and research.
A referral, these are usually good since you know someone that has used the person or service so they will probably work out for you. However, you really need to interview the person as well as personalities may not work together. Another example is an entrepreneur based here in the Los Angeles area wanted to hire a virtual assistant, so they asked for a referral. The referral was an amazing virtual assistant, however not the right one for her. Yet she hired the VA anyway and there was nothing but conflict, communication problems and different perspectives. The way to have avoided some of this heartache would have been to interview the VA first then decide if they should move forward.
Now this goes for both sides, take the time to check out the options and know that everyone is not a right fit for everyone. Just like your ideal client/customer is not anyone with a pulse. You need to be specific on your needs and timelines, don't expect the other person to be a mind reader. Be realistic is your deadlines, remember your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on the other party's part, just saying!
If you research, do not be analytical! Do not keep getting ready to get ready. We are all human, no one person is perfect. Your goal is to determine the best fit and get to business. Too many entrepreneurs become paralyzed by the "I am getting ready to get ready". Make a decision and run with it, you can always add another person to the team or release the one you have.
Be sure to be the person people WANT to work with. This is huge, I have ran into a entrepreneur in Los Angeles that could not keep anyone on their team, constantly bringing on someone new...hummmm. These folks usually are in a place of desperation for money so their craziness oozes out of them. The question I leave with you...would you work with you?
