A friend suggested the idea of a "Cash Stash", a pool of extra change and bills that will eventually add up to something big. Here are some other ideas to clean out your pockets and wallet and end up with something really cool.
Cash Stash: At the end of the day, go through your wallet. If you have $1 bills in there, pull them out and add them to a jar. Each quarter, pull out the dollar bills and use them to pay off credit cards or buy yourself a little treat.
Coin Jar: This technique is common. Every day, empty your wallet of all coins into a jar. Collect coins by picking them up off the street, checking vending machines for abandoned change, and searching the washer and dryer after a load. At the end of the year, take the jar to the bank, where they will cash it out or deposit it for free into your account.
Vacation Frame: Planning a vacation? Use a shadowbox, cut a hole at the top, and put any extra bills you have into it. By the time it's full, you will have extra spending money to play on your trip.
Tip Debt: Work for tips? Put all your tips for one week into an envelope, sorted by dollar amount. At the end of the week, take the $1 and $5 bills and put them straight towards your debt. Use the bigger bills for paying regular bills.
Swear Jar: Popular in offices and homes with teenagers, the swear jar is great for teaching others how to watch their language. Every person who swears puts a quarter in the jar, and when full the money goes to charity. No prizes for swearing more!
