It may be common sense, but a majority of business owners don’t capitalize on this philosophy. Zig Ziglar said it best, "You don’t build a business – you build people – and then people build the business." Cultivating relationships with your team, business associates and fellow entrepreneurs will demonstrate to others that you are a genuine person of quality and integrity. Your reputation will precede you, allowing your business to grow and flourish through your relationships.

Growing segments of the population are entrepreneurs in MLM companies who are looking for prospects to promote their business in order to recruit or sell products or services. These business owners often resort to contacting people outside of their immediate social network in mass emails or on social media platforms in search of leads. This system fails 99% of the time because it disregards the fundamental principles of personally connecting with someone before pitching their business opportunity. The best way to build relationships and ultimately grow your business is to offer your knowledge, support and information. For example, you could offer a free eBook providing valuable information regarding marketing strategies. Providing free training is another way to build relationships and establish yourself as an expert in your field. You will be seen as the guru in the business.

In Dave Ramsey’s book, EntreLeadership, he says, “People mater. Don’t treat customers like revenue units or team members like units of production.” Building relationships first and foremost is the key to a successful business. Providing free training, eBooks or information is just some of the ways you can start building those relationships. Zig Ziglar said that if we will "help others get what they want; we will in turn get what we want." Therefore, if you want to be successful as a business owner, you should ask yourself how you can help others and improve their skills. Become a valuable resource to those in your business and share your knowledge with everyone so you can build a successful business one relationship at a time.
