March 10,1997 marks the day that the world of television changed- Buffy the Vampire Slayer first entered our world of entertainment.
Joss Whedon's creation starred Sarah Michelle Geller as a high school cheerleader who was the chosen one- the vampire slayer. Whedon wanted to create a story that questioned many prejudices about females. He wanted a strong blond female lead that would break the mold of all stereotypes. He graduated with a feminist studies degree that would later be seen throughout his other creations such as Angel, Dollhouse and Serenity.
BTVS evolved from the campy movie with the same name that later became a series that gained an enormous cult following that it lasted 7 seasons. Once the series ended began to contine 8 in graphic novel form. There was even a short lived animated series as well as a spin off show Angel
The stories begin with Buffy finding out that she has to save Sunnydale from vampires. Along the way her friends Cordelia, Zander, Willow, Anya, her sister Dawn, and her watcher Giles, fight the bad guys, find their place in the Scooby Gang, and love and loss as a family. Buffy loves along the way include 2 vampires,Angel and Spike, and a human named Riley.
The series can be bought at a cheap price at walmart.com
The success of BTVS has also created a huge academic following. At any fantasy, horror, writing, or pop culture convention there are academic panels discussing the academic contributions and cultural impact of the series.
Here are a few of the academic associations that are attributed to the Buffyverse:
-
Slayage Online Magazine
-
The Whedon Studies Association
-
The Watcher Junior
-
Buffy Bibliography
-
Whedon Studies Conference- 2010
- as well as numerous books on the academic aspects of Buffy and the Whedonverse
Are there anyone fans here in the Lexington area?
I am a member of the Whedon Studies Association and would be interested in forming an academic and fandom group in the area. Please comment below or email me directly if you are interested in forming this event or going to the conference in the summer.
