With sleep deprivation a growing issue and office napping an on-the-rise trend, senior lecturer Mike Fox – a faculty member at Buffalo State University – decided to enter the Dove Men+Care #IrritationFreeMondays contest, so his fellow colleagues could enjoy the benefits of napping at the office. Fox and his colleagues have lobbied the school for a napping facility for some time now, and with the concept approved, but funding not available, Fox entered for the luxury nap pod. Teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses, Fox and his colleagues often work day and night, leaving them worn-out and in need of a nap. Ironically, their work in the creative studies department is spent teaching the importance of sleep and how it can ward off irritability and stimulate creativity.
“I can’t believe we won this nap pod! We’re really excited here at the department because we teach the importance of sleep for warding off irritability and stoking creativity. Yet, between busy class schedules, research and writing, we’re often left a bit tired. It’s quite ironic. We even pitched the university for a napping facility because we want to consider a broader view of creativity using the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking and several other measures to tease out the relationship of a nap to a larger world of applied creativity. Fox’s prize is perfectly timed as the National Sleep Foundation’s Sleep Awareness Week™ quickly approaches (March 2-9), followed by national “Napping Day” on March 10, 2014 – the day after daylight savings, which causes Americans to lose an hour of sleep.
