"I longed for the cool air of the mountains and to the mountains I determined to go." William (Buffalo Bill) Cody.
He had a passion for the out of doors that kept him working outside for most of his career, except for when he was a showman, working on the stage in New York and Chicago. Afterwards he returned to the great outdoors again with his "Wild West Show"
Buffalo Bill is one of the most celebrated outdoorsman in the greater Denver area with several birthday parties splashed around the region to celebrate his life this weekend.
This author hasn't lived in the area for a long time yet, and didn't know much about Buffalo Bill. She decided it was time to find out about him since she loves it here and plans to stay in the area as long as she's breathing. It seemed the best birthday party to go to for that was the one and Buffalo Bills museum and grave, ( http://www.buffalobill.org ) on the actual birthday itself.
One of the highlights of the celebration was to be a buffalo chip throwing contest. This author has never witnessed one of those and was fascinated by the idea of it. Unfortunately however, since the snow was still so deep on the ground at that elevation, the contest had to be cancelled because of a lack of accesable buffalo chips.
In spite of that outdoor activity being cancelled, it was still a good celebration. Birthday cake and ice cream were had by all, of course. And there was a wonderful costume contest so there were many people walking around in very authentic looking Buffalo Bill regalia! As well as a few people in Annie Oakly costumes as well.
The grave is just a short walk from the museum. It's easy to see why Buffalo Bill picked that area as a final resting spot. (There was a lot of controversy around that decision at the time and for years afterward.) The views from the mountain are breathtakingly pristine.
The destination is worth a trip back, if for no other reason than to explore the trails in the area because of the beauty of the vistas from Lookout Mountain.
