Contacting a club or business ahead of a planned visit is always recommended to clarify policies.

Hill Country Nudists of Austin

TEXAS HILL COUNTRY is the term applied to a region including all or part of twenty-five counties near the geographical center of Texas. The region takes its name from tall rugged hills consisting of thin layers of soil atop limestone or granite. The Hill Country begins just north of Austin, continues south to San Antonio and spans west some 200 miles before the land begins to flatten out.

Not only is the Hill Country central to Texas and home to Austin the state capital, many Texans consider it the heart and soul of the state given the vast array of cultural diversity and natural features that come together to create such a uniquely appealing region. The land’s beautiful rolling hills, sparkling rivers and lakes and the prominent display of bluebonnets every spring are home to the independent spirit Texans pride themselves on.

HILL COUNTRY NUDISTS of Austin is a non-landed club with more than 100 members according to the website, which serves Austin and surrounding communities in the Hill Country. As stated on the organization's website, the club has been in existence since the mid 1980s, founded at a time when nude recreation wasn't that popular a pastime in central Texas. Social nudity in those days was almost exclusively the realm of indoors on private property or behind the privacy fences of a few private nudist resorts.

The founding of Hill Country Nudists has a rather unique and interesting story behind it. In the 1980s, a small community of freedom-lovers, predominantly college students, shared a clothing-optional apartment complex for several years and enjoyed there the freedom of social nudity. Eventually the apartment complex owner sold the property and with the ownership change, the clothing optional atmosphere was nixed. Shortly, many of tenants moved on.

Several of the former tenants thought it would be a good idea to keep the former clothing optional community alive by starting an informal club. A club was formed and the group began gathering at local swimming holes and at locations on the Texas Gulf coast. They also visited some of the area landed nudist resorts. In time the group became affiliated as a non-landed club with the American Sunbathing Association, now known as the American Association for Nude Recreation.

Getting there

As a non-landed club, Hill Country Nudists does not own any property, operate a resort or have any permanent physical facilities. The club typically holds gatherings once or twice each month where members socialize and have a good time. The locations, themes and size of the gatherings vary.

The club does host a monthly “Introduction to Nude Recreation” informational meeting aimed at educating the general public. The meetings are currently held in the private dining area of the Kerbey Lane Cafe, 3003 South Lamar Boulevard in Austin, at 6:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month.

These informational meetings are informal, clothed events, where those curious about social nudity have an opportunity to meet members of HCN, learn a bit about social nudity and get their questions about the lifestyle answered. It is also an opportunity to learn about the upcoming activities that the club has planned.

Even for those who are not new to social nudity but who are interested in becoming a member of Hill Country Nudists, attending one of the monthly informational meetings is a great way to learn more about the club and to get acquainted with some of the HCN members. HCN has members from all over of the state and only about a 3-hour drive south of Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin isn't too far away for Metroplex area nudists to consider participating in HCN events. Those interested in attending one of the monthly informational meetings can find detailed directions to the meeting location on the club website.

When to go

As mentioned above, the HCN monthly informational meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. While the summer months (May-September) form the prime season for outdoor nude recreation in Texas, Hill Country Nudists does meet during the other months of the year. Annual New Year's themed-parties and the club's participation in the annual Chili Cook-off/Pie Contest at Sahnoans at Star Ranch nudist park in January are but two examples of club events held during the colder months. HCN maintains an events page on the club website where information on upcoming events and activities are posted.

Activities

In the past Hill Country Nudists has hosted wine tastings, movie nights, boat parties, ethnic cooking parties and parties with live music. Gatherings are held at the private homes of members and the club organizes group outings to local landed nudist clubs and other destinations.

HCN is also actively involved in the Austin community. The club participates in local programs such as Barton Creek Greenbelt cleanups for Keep Austin Beautiful, Austin Parks’ Christmas Tree Recycling program and the Austin Capital Area Food Bank.

Food and drink

Availability of food and drink is dependent on the type and location of club events and activities.

The outdoors

Outdoor nude recreational opportunities are available with Hill Country Nudists throughout the year in the form of group outings to area landed clubs, Hippie Hollow Park, Lake Travis and other appropriate destinations.

Affiliations

HCN is affiliated with the American Association for Nude Recreation through the AANR-Southwest Region and with The Naturist Society. Membership in Hill Country Nudists requires simultaneous membership in either of those organizations. The choice of which organization to join is left up to the individual members. Current membership in either organization is honored by the club but memberships to either organization can be obtained through HCN by those who do not already have a membership.

Membership

The inclusive nature of Hill Country Nudists really sets this non-landed club apart from most. Membership is open to all, regardless of ethnicity, gender or marital status. Singles will find HCN more welcoming than many other non-landed clubs as such commonly enforce quota systems or couples only policy in an attempt to maintain a desired balance between males and females.

Prospective members are required to participate in two club sponsored activities prior to being considered for membership in Hill Country Nudists. One of the two activities a prospective member must participate in must be a social nudity event. The other can be any type event so attending one of the monthly clothed informational meetings would qualify as a non-nude event. The intent of the two activity requirement is to give prospective members the chance to get acquainted with other club members, to learn about the activities the club offers and to allow existing members to get acquainted with prospective members.

Once the above requirements have been met and a prospective member has submitted a completed membership application with a check for the appropriate first year annual dues, the board of directors will vote on whether to admit them to the club. As a part of the membership application process, HCN does perform a background check on applicants. Applicants are notified of the board's decision by email and if accepted for membership, the applicants are placed on the membership e-mail list to receive announcements for newsletters and scheduled club events.

Dues and fees

Annual dues paid directly to Hill Country Nudists are $25 for singles and $40 for couples or families. HCN offers a discounted rate of $20 per year to full-time students upon presentation of satisfactory proof of full-time enrollment at an educational institution.

In addition, as mentioned above, membership in HCN requires a simultaneous membership in either the American Association for Nude Recreation or The Naturist Society. New members that already hold active membership in one or both of the national organizations meet the requirement. For those who do not, discounted memberships to either or both of those organizations is available through HCN.

In addition to the discounted HCN dues rate for full-time students, students are also exempt from the requirement to hold an AANR or TNS membership so that budget constraints won't be an impediment to students joining and participating in club events.

Buff stuff

As spelled out in the Hill Country Nudists Mission Statement, the club is dedicated to the wholesome acceptance of the human body and the enjoyment of nude recreation, promotes freedom enjoyed through nude recreation and places an emphasis on creativity and inclusiveness, will always honor a member’s anonymity and will strive for greater acceptance of the body in society and embraces non sexual social nudity as a legitimate aspect of life in our society.

As an affiliate of both major national nudist and naturist organizations, expect that Hill Country Nudists adheres to the accepted, traditional values and principles of wholesome, non-sexual, family-friendly social nudity such as; nude when possible and appropriate, no overt sexual activity, respect for others and for the environment and behavior requiring an apology is unacceptable.
