BudgetYourWedding : When to Go Pro?

Choices, choices, choices when it comes to your wedding budget! Where should the money be spent?

Couples should consider two professional services for both their value and long-term savings, according to wedding planner Cheryl Abbott. "The areas to focus a budget on are the photographer, since that's what you'll have to remember the day once it's all over, and the planner/coordinator, since they can help pull it all together, eliminate or minimize the stress of planning leading up to the big day, and then manage the details on the day so everyone can enjoy it to their fullest," said Abbott, a North Central Florida wedding planner based in Jacksonville.

As owner of Forever Sacred Events, Abbott has advice based on years of experience. "In many cases, a planner can make design recommendations, vendor suggestions and budget tips that often provide the client with better value for the budget they set." Like many planners, Abbott's services range from full-service packages to day-of coordinating to email advice, a good option for the organized DIY bride.

When it comes to photographers, the market is flooded with "weekend warriors" (those who have other jobs during the week), newbies who have digital cameras and knowledge of PhotoShop, photographers from other fields who have migrated to weddings for additional revenue, and established studios and photographers. Prices vary, ranging anywhere from $500 (or less) to $50,000.

"Couples should hire photographers who have degrees, experience, training and awards," said professional photographer and Gainesville native Shary Connella. Make sure to look at their entire wedding coverage, get references, meet personally if possible and read the contract. If a friend or family member offers to shoot the wedding, make sure he or she is up to the task.

"While your best friend's best friend may shoot nice photos, or a favorite relative has a cool camera, let them enjoy your wedding and leave what is probably the biggest day of your life so far to us professionals," said Florida wedding photojournalist Craig Litten.

If professional photography is just not an option, consider a pre-wedding engagement shoot or post-wedding Trash the Dress or other couples session, available from many professional photographers at a lower rate.
