This article is the second in a series exploring some of the great inexpensive wines you can find at your local Las Vegas Fresh & Easy. If you missed the first stop, click here to find out more. The next stop is Lodi, California, where you will get to sample Leccino 2008 Old Vine Zinfandel.
Zinfandel is a wonderful red grape that pairs with many different foods, or stands on its own as a great wine for enjoying anytime. Zinfandel should never be confused with White Zinfandel. In fact, Zinfandel is quite the opposite of its pink counterpart, offering rich bold flavors and usually a touch of spice.
Leccino has created a decent little Zin. The aromas and flavors include cherry, which is typical of most Zinfandels, but also plum, dark chocolate and black pepper. The wine is big enough to pair with a steak, and restrained enough to compliment salmon or blackened chicken. Overall the wine is not quite as bold and fruity as some other Zinfandels, but for $5.99, you will not be disappointed.
If you have never tried Zinfandel, explore some others as well. This varietal is often overlooked and under appreciated by those unfamiliar with its long heritage. Zinfandel is genetically identical to Primitivo, its Italian cousin, so seek out both and have fun comparing. There are also some great Late Harvest Zinfandels, perfect for a liquid dessert. Start with the Leccino and see what you think. The wine is such a great deal, you might grab a few bottles and share with friends. Cheers!
