Budget-friendly theater with a bang in Plan-B Theatre Company’s 2011-2012 season

When the economy stinks, businesses generally try to save themselves by making things worse for the rest of us. They raise prices so they can keep meeting bills, leaving the rest of us still in the hole and losing money at an even faster rate than we were before.

Recognizing this, Plan-B Theatre Company has decided to buck the trend. The group recently released their upcoming 2011-2012 season, and they’ve dropped season ticket pricesfrom $87 down to $75 (they’re currently for sale online). Individual tickets have dropped somewhat, too, with individual tickets for all four of next season’s shows coming to $85 (though even then, buy early. Plan-B shows tend to sell out.)

Of course, the great season vs. individual ticket debate comes from how many of the season’s shows you’ll want to see (and how important it is to get a first crack at seat/ticket selection). The season will start off a free reading of a new translation of “A Doll House” by Eric Samuelsen, then follow up with “Lady Macbeth,” a world premiereby playwright Aden Ross that brings various Shakespearean characters together for a political satire.

After that will be “The Third Crossing,” a world premiere by Debora Threedy that looks at the relationship of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings. Then will be a new adaptation of the classic “The Scarlet Letter” by Jenifer Nii, which will also have its world premiere, and the season will end with the fresh, fiercely imaginitive 2012 Slam (which runs one night only).
