Social media has become a hotbed on which the Buddhist sangha has flourished. On Twitter and various other social networking sites, Buddhists have been signing on in droves to participate in the conversation. As we open our hearts and minds in the 21st century (along with our Macs and PCs), let's review some favorites from Twitter.

The ground rules to make this list are simple- it can't be obvious (like ShambalaPubs, Tricyclemag or ElephantJournal), the feed must be regularly updated, and the tweets must be positive and non-argumentative. My own Twitter feed is linked to the Twitter graphic above, and you can find a huge list of similar Twitter feeds by subscribing to the OhioBuddhist Buddhism List. Enjoy, and please comment below the article with your own suggestions!

  • @jhalifax Joan Halifax Roshi is the founder of Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Besides her well-known work in the areas of engaged Buddhism in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh and environmental activism, she is the Director of the Project on Being with Dying as well as the Upaya Prison Project. her tweets are a mixture of links, a smattering of quotes, and a lot of flow-of-consciousness thoughts. Try their free email newsletter, too.
  • @digitalzendo Seiho Jaye Morris is the founder of the blog/sangha digitalZENDO, a lay-ordained Zen practitioner and a living Bodhisattva. His posts, tweets and thoughts are a pure cultivation of the Eightfold Path in the modern world. If you connect with his raw but tender offerings, just wait until you read the book we are writing together. You will not be disappointed.
  • @onBuddhist This account is managed by the Buddhist social network onBuddhist, a forward-thinking Buddhist online sangha and companion of my similar-minded network, Peace Ground Zero. Their Twitter feed is an open and positive conversation that promotes Buddhist events, news, and friendly Buddhist Twitterers.
  • @tinyBuddha TinyBuddha has is remarkable for more reasons than its more than 60,000 followers without following anyone themselves. TinyBuddha.com is an ad-free article and Tweet site that offers tips and stories, the only evident purpose seemingly to be be a positive influence to the community. They are undoubtably reTweet-worthy.
  • @Buddhism_Now A publishing company from the UK with a laundry list of books, pamphlets and magazine issues to their credit, their roster of authors includes such notables as Ajahn Sumedho and the Dalai Lama. Their site BuddhismNow additionally offers Mp3 talks and movies erelvant to the international sangha, and their free email newsletter is worth the subscribe alongside their Twitter feed.
  • @MandalaPubs Mandala magazine is the official publication of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition, but their Twitter account is not yet as well-known.
  • @NellaLou Popular Buddhist blogger Marnie tweets from India and writes the Enlightenment Ward blog, which this month featured a great post about Twitter and blogging in the Buddhist world. This month she was also a major contender for the Best Buddhist Blogger of 2009 awarded by Elephant Journal.
  • @BuddhistGeeks Vince Horn has been running his podcast show 'Buddhist Geeks: Seriously Buddhist, Seriously Geeky' out of Boulder, CO for a few years now and it has quickly become a must-have for every Buddhist iPod and Mp3 player. The tweets have the same brand of personality that makes the podcasts so relatable.
  • @DigitalDharma This feed is centered around a documentary about a man who has devoted his life to committing as many Tibetan text as possible to a digital library, to preserve the texts against the war that has destroyed lives, monasteries, and attempted to annihilate an entire culture. Watch the trailer here.
  • @DhammaLinks Listed only under the name 'Buddhist Ed', this feed is an active participant and author of the popular list 'Twangha'.

If this post is popular, I will make it a monthly feature. Let me know what you think below!

Sweet! Yes please do so and continue this list. In fact you could just list some "lists" like @minddeep's twangha list (I think it is @minddeed, I could be @iDharma's list).

You are writing a book with Jaye? Honestly, that is awesome. I would be so up for reading it. Jaye is an amazing social media communicator and was my first contact on this big old twitter sangha!

Shoot me an email about the book. I would love to review it when it is done.

    Cheers,

    John
