Buddhism and Christianity: Why can't both be right?

April 8, 2010 is Buddha Day.

With the different claims that Buddhism and Christianity make, it would be impossible for both to be true. It is important to remember that God loves the Buddhist people (he loves every soul) and Christians are called to love all Buddhist people and to share the love and compassion of Christ.

If Christianity is true, Buddhism is false

If Christianity is true, Buddhism is false. Both cannot be true due to each of their claims. If Christianity is true, but a person chooses Buddhism instead, that person will not attain salvation (because they have rejected the only Savior, Jesus Christ). Buddha did not claim to be a Savior nor did he claim to be God. If Christianity is true, than all of what Jesus said is true as well. That includes all of His statements, including: "I am the way and the Truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me". If Christ was telling the truth, there is no such thing as future reincarnated lives at all. Rather, there will be only death then judgment and hell, for the Bible says, "...man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment" (Hebrews 9:27).

A choice

If Buddhism is true, that would automatically make Christianity false and Jesus a liar. Keep in mind that every prophecy of scripture in the Bible predicted to this point in time has come completely true; it is historical fact. The Bible is the only religious book with any fulfilled prophecies (there are hundreds).

Athiest-turned-Christian C.S. Lewis in his book Mere Christianity wrote the following: "I am trying here to prevent anyone from saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him (Jesus Christ): 'I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept his claim to be God.' That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on a level with a man who says he is a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that option open to us. He did not intend to."

This is a pretty one-sided and incomplete article. To say that if Buddhism is correct then Christianity is a lie is a work in half-truths, because the Buddha taught that everything is a construct of the human mind, not just religion, but all attachments. If Buddhism is correct, then everything is a lie, even the concept of a lie. Nirvana, the goal of a Buddhist, is a state of nothing. Nothing for eternity is a concept that scares most Westerners. On the Christianity side of the argument, one aspect of Christianity is used here as the last word. Christians, like members of any religion, don't all agree, and the majority opinion changes over time. To put pitch these two belief systems against each other is silly, anyway. To do so in such incomplete terms is irresponsible.

    Hi Jael,
Thank you for your comment. Well, Jesus taught truth, and that there are lies and there are truths. You mentioned that if Buddhism is correct, then everything is a lie, event the concept of a lie. Christianity explains that there is real truth - and that instead of a state of nothing, Jesus taught that there really is a heaven and hell. The Christian doctrine has never changed, it's been the same, for it is not based on majority opinion but on the scriptures, Truth spoken through the Holy Spirit by God's Holy prophets and Jesus himself. We can also know the Bible is true due to the over 300 prophecies that have been fulfilled perfectly, dead sea scrolls, etc, as well as the wonderful Holy Spirit who fills Christians and comes upon Christians, giving them the fruit of the Spirit which is love, joy, peace, etc. (that is where the extreme joy of the born-again Christian comes from).
I appreciate your comments as always :)
    Have a wonderful day!!
    Love and respect,

If you are Buddhist, or any other religion, know that Jesus loves you so, so much! He invites all men to Him, regardless of who you are or your past, to have a relationship with Him, as well as the promise of eternal life. His love is so, so big! Jesus said:

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls" (Matthew 11).

You can read my other articles on salvation if it interests you! God loves you! Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life..." He is the Truth, trust me! He loves you more than you will ever know! Make today the day you get saved and accept this incredible gift! :)

"Thanks be to God for this indescribable gift!"

Yes, Jesus is the Messiah Lord and Savior! He is not a teacher or a lunatic! He is the Son of God and He is God. He loves us all and wants all of us to go to heaven. It is up to us to choose to be with Him in heaven or not. The choice is ours.
