Buckminster Fuller labeled himself a comprehensive, anticipatory design scientist or comprehensivist for short. This means that he was interested in everything and always looking to solve problems that he knew would arise in the future. He did this by creating artifacts that alter environments and thereby change people’s behavior.
Bucky’s comprehensive discipline also gave him a very broad perspective that allowed him to see things in ways few other people did back when he was alive (1895 - 1983) or even today. Thus when he declared,
this statement was perceived by most people as radical if not ridiculous. Regardless of our initial reaction, the statement does cause us to think about the situation.
The ignorance Bucky Fuller spoke of is not stupidity. It’s a question of simply not knowing, and the not knowing here is the fact that there is enough of everything on the planet Bucky named Spaceship Earth to care for everybody - right now. We have enough food, clean water, energy, love and everything else required to support all life on Earth in a sustainable manner, but most people don’t know this simple fact.
Bucky Fuller was the first person who proved this to be true, and he spent much of his adult life on a campaign to inform others about his finding. The caveat to this gem of wisdom is the fact that we must shift our resources and focus from weaponry to livingry in order to create the sustainable “world that works for everyone” that Bucky often spoke and wrote about.
Now that more research has been done, we also know that if we shifted just 40% of our global resources from weaponry to livingry we would solve all physical problems for all people including ending hunger, ending homelessness, providing all people with good medical care and ending the climate crisis. This is not some pie-in-the-sky theory. It’s a proven reality, and all we need to do is wake up from our slumber of delusion and ignorance.
May all people awaken to the truth of our abundance so that we can create a true Heaven on Earth today.
