Buckminster Fuller was much more than the architect, inventor and futurist that most people know him as. He was also a spiritual master, and many consider him to have been a Bodhisattva.
This simple quote represents his insight into the basic structure of all life. In many of his “thinking out loud lectures” (which were usually six to eight hour long, stream of consciousness talks without interruption), Bucky would say that his physical body was simply “yesterday’s breakfast” and when it was gone, he was not gone. He would then suggest that we simply needed to find other ways to communicate with him.
Since his death in 1983, thousands of people have found that communication vehicle, or, perhaps, Bucky has found a vehicle for communicating with us. People report seeing him in a seemingly physical form for an instant, having vivid dreams in which he comes to them and many other manifestations of the pattern integrity we know as Buckminster Fuller.
A fairly common phrase we often hear is, “I am a spiritual being having a physical experience.” Bucky was aware of this, and he acted with a keen sense that there is much more than we can know through our intellect or our five senses. He also recognized that he (like everyone) is immortal, and he coined the term “pattern integrity” to describe that immortal aspect of each living being that continues on forever.
May we all come to appreciate the larger, comprehensive vision of reality that supports our growth and development.
