“I don’t have any favorite places or people. I love the whole show. A large number of beautiful people have taught me a great deal, and I am deeply indebted to them for their support.” - Buckminster Fuller
Many people have argued that Buckminster Fuller was a living modern Bodhisattva, and this quote certainly reflects the gratitude and omni-inclusiveness of such a being.
Bucky was constantly expressing his gratitude to all those who had supported him and his mission to create “a world that works for everyone,” but he was also appreciative of those who provided challenges along the path. Those people, like the ones he most loved, were - and still are - crewmembers aboard the planet he named Spaceship Earth, and as such were entitled to his respect and love.
Early in his life, Bucky discovered that we were approaching a period when surviving and thriving would be for everybody or nobody. He was one of the first visionaries to realize and campaign for equal resources, justice, education and everything else for all people while supporting the creation of a sustainable ecology that supports all life on Earth. He also proved that beginning in the mid-1970’s we had arrived at a point in time when there were - and still are - enough resources to support all life in a sustainable manner.
Accordingly, he equally loved “the whole show,” all of life and every square inch of Earth, and he was not shy in expressing his gratitude. He also continued to express his gratitude to all those who had been his teachers be they the young children he so often taught and interacted with or the elders from whom he received the wisdom of past generations.
This is the true indication of a humble servant on the path of the Bodhisattva. Favoring none and working unselfishly on behalf of the whole is the discipline.
And these are the type of global citizens who are truly needed in these perilous times when, as Bucky so often reminded us, humankind is facing it’s “final examination” to answer the cosmic question,
Hopefully, we can all learn from the template of the contributory life that Bucky lived and do our best to open our hearts with love and compassion to all sentient beings.
May we all realize our true nature as humble servants grateful for the bounty of this moment.
