The beautiful weather of Chicago is keeping Buckingham Fountain flowing a little longer than usual. Although the park district's website states the fountain is on from May 1 until the middle of October, depending on weather, Chicago has certainly cooporated to allow residents and tourists an Indian Summer to enjoy the fall foliage and the beauty of the fountain.
Chicago weather is unpredictable and the warm temperatures and sunny days may change at any time.
Buckingham Fountain is one of Chicago's most popular attractions and one of the largest fountains in the world. Designed by Edward H. Bennett, the fountain first opened in 1927 and is named for the Clarence Buckingham, the brother of the fountain's benefactor, Kate.
The fountain is constructed of pink marble and Bennet designed it to represent Lake Michigan with four sea horses. The structure was actually built by Marcel Loyau. Each horse reprsents the four staes that surrounds Lake Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.
The beauty of Chicago can still be enjoyed in the Winter. Get out and enjoy.
