Tucked away on the lower level of the enclosed courtyard of shops of Andrew Square in Buckhead, awaits a dimly lit wine and food oasis. This place is great for a happy hour or kicking things off with some wine and tapas before the rest of your night begins. Cellar 56 is part of the group that owns Stout Irish Pub (formerly McDuff's), East Andrews and East Andrews Upstairs all in the same building. It's name comes from the number of wine selections to choose from, but also happens to be the street address and they claim 90+ rated (Wine Spectator) wines for only $24. Unfortunately, this night, no highly rated wines were consumed, however, there are many good selections to choose from at a decent price even for wine-by-the-glass standards.
Chef Josh, Cellar 56's prized conjurer of small plates, produces some creative mini-bites to enjoy with the wine including Duck Confit flatbread with Fig Jam and Point Reyes blue cheese and New Bedford Scallop with Sweet Corn and Applewood Bacon, which are both simply delicious and savory. Chef Josh was gracious enough to come out and meet-n-greet some of the patrons and shared that the duck is slowly cooked in duck fat for over 14 hours at a temperature of 200 degrees and that the fig jam is also homemade.
Ian Morrison, resident Sommelier and wine buyer, is very knowledgeable and enjoys working with the customers to find a wine to meet everyone's tastes. The 2005 Teira Zinfandel Sonoma paired wonderfully with the Duck Confit thanks to his recommendation. This place is very wine-friendly, so don't be afraid to ask anything of this uber-jovial staff including the vibrant bartender, Danny. He is very attentive and ensured each patron is happy with their selection.
While there are some higher end wines for $42 and $56 available on the wine list, including several single vineyard Zinfandel selections from Turley, the bar experience and being able to try many different varieties, styles and regions of wine while sharing awesome tapas-style plates with your friends is the real draw of this place.
