The last two weekends of the Big Ten’s inaugural regular season are upon us, and the Gophers will spend them on the road, as they travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Ohio State University Buckeyes for a pair this weekend. Friday’s puck drop is at 6:30pm CT while Saturday’s game is an hour earlier, at 5:30pm CT. Let’s take you inside some crucial numbers.
15: Dating back to a game in December 1968, Ohio State and Minnesota have played fifteen times. Minnesota has won all but one of them. The loss came in 1998 at Mariucci Arena.
13: In the last two games in Columbus, the Gophers have scored thirteen goals (back in October 2006). Over those same two games, OSU has scored just five.
2: Each and every current Gopher shares a common thread with the number two, having played Ohio State twice earlier in the season. They played in the Hockey City Classic at TCF Bank Stadium and on Hockey Day Minnesota over Jan 17-18. The Gophers won both games.
10: In this series all-time, the biggest amount of total Gopher goals scored in a game has been ten, and it was accomplished twice: December 26, 1968 in Madison during a Big Ten Tournament game and on December 20, 1977 in a regular season contest at Williams Arena.
12: Hudson Fasching, whose pro rights were traded from Los Angeles to Buffalo on deadline day, leads all Big Ten freshmen with twelve goals and is second in total freshmen points.
60: Let’s face it. Kyle Rau is phenomenal. Minnesota is 60-9-5 when he tallies a point, including 39-4-4 since the start of the 2012-13 season.
29: To parlay on that last statistic, Minnesota is 29-2-0 all time when Rau puts more than a single point on the board.
61: Spoiler alert...This number is not Roger Maris related. Minnesota has given up a national low of sixty-one goals this season, and their 1.91 goals against average is also top dog in the nation.
