Buck Hill offers the last-gasp chance for snowboarding in Twin Cities

And then there was one.

Residents of the Twin Cities are blessed to have multiple ski areas to choose from, but right now, only one is open for business: Buck Hill. As it stands, closing day is projected for Saturday, April 6, or five days after opening day of Major League Baseball.

Conditions on the hill are remarkably good for so late in the year. Today, grooming marks were evident even mid-day. There were a few patches of melted-snow-ice, but less than you could count on one hand. The was some slush near the top of the main quad (splitting Crossroads and Milk Run), but nothing too bad. If you'd like to try your luck with some moguls, there's a long, compact set of them on the chairlift side of Milk Run.

Freestyle enthusiasts can find plenty of features still available in the two terrain parks, and the halfpipe is still open.

At midday, there were probably as many employees and ski patrollers working as there were customers, so this last week is offering plenty of open slope time.

Tickets are $13 for skiing or riding from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Prices go up to $20 on Saturday, when the hours are 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. If you have a season pass (and thus don't have to pay for a ticket), stop in the lodge for a snack or something to drink. The operations don't run on charity, and sending a little money to the food and beverage operations rewards Buck for offering everyone the chance for some late-season fun on the snow.

If air temperatures warm up a lot, all bets are off, so be sure to check the Buck Hill website before you head out.
