It looks like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have found a gem in their new general manager Jason Licht. Licht, like so many others, has worked with Bill Belichick in the past, and everyone knows Belichick is considered one of the brightest minds in the game. At the time of the hire, Buccaneers Co-Chairman Joel Glazer hinted as much, specifically citing Licht's strong personnel background.
"We are excited to welcome Jason Licht as the new general manager of the Buccaneers. Jason is a seasoned NFL personnel veteran who has worked with some of the most accomplished individuals in professional football while contributing to success in New England, Philadelphia and Arizona. His strong player personnel background provides the ideal complement to Lovie Smith’s philosophy as our head coach. We look forward to working with Jason and Lovie as we set the foundation and chart the course for the future of Buccaneers football," said Buccaneers Co-Chairman Joel Glazer.
Licht will have to move fast in order to turn around the fortune's of this Buccaneers football team, but clearly the Buccaneers are going in a different direction. Licht is the opposite of former general manager Mark Dominik, who was widely considered one of the NFL's best salary-cap managers. However, Dominik wasn't the strongest when it came to personnel, which is why he heavily relied on his right-hand man Dennis Hickey.
Starting with the draft in May, we will begin to see how different the philosophy of the Buccaneers is, especially with head coach Lovie Smith lightening things up down in Tampa.
