On a cold, drizzly Tuesday night in St. Louis Park, the Benilde-St. Margaret's girls soccer team clinched their retuirn trip to the state tournament as Emma Van der Heide and Jordan Maddaus scored two goals apiece to lead the Red Knights to a 5-1 win over the Orono Spartans in the Section 6A championship game.
It was the second meeting this season between the two section rivals. On September 7, BSM shut out Orono 3-0.
The Red Knights got on the board when Megan Katopodis fed Van Der Heide and the freshman kicked a line drive into the net to give BSM a 1-0 halftime lead.
It took only 50 seconds into the second half for the Red Knights to score their second goal. Once again katopodis made the play, passing to Maddaus in the center slot and she increased the lead to two. She would also pick up a second goal to increase the lead to three.
Van De Heide would score from the right side to put BSM up by four. There would be no championship shutout for the Red Knights as Taylor Eckerline would tally, ending would tally, ending BSM's unanswered goal streak at 42. Alexa Tataryn would wrap up the scoring with 8:24 left to clinch the Red Knights return trip to state.
BSM increased their record to 15-3-1 and will play in the Class A quarterfinals next week. Date, time, opponent and site to me determined. The four quarterfinals sites are St. Cloud State University, Park High School in Cottage Grove, St. Louis Park High School and Chisago Lakes Area High School in Lindstrom.
Orono concluded their season with a 16-3-1 record.
