Brushing your Rabbit

February 14, 2011

Brushing your rabbit is a regular part of grooming. Hair Brushes and Combs come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Your bunny’s coat should determine the length of the bristles. They can be purchased at any local pet store. Try to find brushes with bristles rather than metal teeth. Rabbit skin is sensitive and easily irritated. Hard brushing with metal bristles can cause redness, irritation and possibly cause surface wounds. If a brush with metal teeth is all that is available, use it delicately.

While brushing your bunny, check for mats in the hair. Gently separate and pulled apart matted hair. You can use a comb or brush to help. If the mat does not pull apart, you may need to clip it out with a scissors but use this as a last resort. Bunny’s skin is very delicate and can be easily cut.

Regular brushing of the coat will not only help prevent hairballs that can be fatal to a bunny, it can help prevent fur mites, help remove dead skin, make a sleeker healthier coat AND it is a good way to bond with your bunny. They love attention just like any animal or child.
