With February as National Pet Dental health Month, this is a good time to start the habit, if you don't already do so, of brushing your Belgian's teeth.
Good dental health reflects on your Belgian's overall health. A mouth with infections may spread disease to other organs such as the heart and kidneys. Bad breath is never attractive. In addition, faithful home care can minimize the need for your Belgian to have a full dental cleaning at the veterinary clinic.
According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, up to 80 percent of all dogs may have some dental disease by age three. Of course, that statistic includes toy breeds and dogs with abnormal bites, so the numbers for Belgians should be a bit better. Still, getting your Belgian used to toothbrushing is a good thing.
Step 1 is to get pet toothpaste. Human toothpaste is designed to be spit out and even our clever Belgians tend not to spit on command. Most Belgians seem to like the poultry flavor paste with beef a close second. Mint and malt are generally not favorites.
Step 2 is a way to apply the toothpaste. There are special pet toothbrushes and finger brushes that work well. A small child's toothbrush can also be used. For some Belgians, putting the paste on a gauze pad also works.
Step 3 is getting your Belgian to enjoy this whole process. You may need to start by simply letting your Belgian lick some toothpaste off your finger. Don't try to hold the mouth wide open. You can slip the brush or gauze up under the lip without even opening the mouth.
