Born and raised in Hawaii, Mars received a Moonman trophy at the recent MTV Video Music Awards for Best Male Video.
His previous hit songs include "Just the Way You Are," which sold 12.5 million copies, making Mars the best-selling digital artist in 2011.
He has had a total of five singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and six top ten singles.
Mars is half-Puerto Rican and half-Jewish on his father's side and Filipino-Spanish on his mother's side.
His parents met while performing in a show together where his mother was a hula dancer and his father played percussion.
As for his stage name, Mars said that it came about because of a nickname his father gave him and something girls would say to him.
"Bruno is after Bruno Sammartino, who was this big fat wrestler," Mars told Rap-Up.com. "I guess I was this chunky little baby, so my dad used to call me that as a nickname. The Mars came up just because I felt like I didn’t have no pizzazz, and a lot of girls say 'I’m out of this world,' so I was like 'I guess I’m from Mars.'"
