Bruno Mars is racking up the honors in 2013. Not only has the talented musician scored four Grammy Award nominations, including nominations for record and song of the year, but according to a Dec. 13 Billboard report, Mars is Billboard’s top artist of the year for 2013. According to Billboard, the triple threat singer, songwriter and producer is the first man to claim the title since 2008.
Reuters describes Mars’s music as “crosses over between pop, R&B, soul and hip hop,” and notes that “he is known for conjuring up different musical eras within his albums.” The singer ranked highest on eight of Billboard’s year-end music charts, including Mainstream Top 40 and the Hot 100 Artists.
Mars rose to the top of the Billboard charts with a steady presence on the Billboard 200. He “grabbed hold of the album and single charts and never let go.” To date, his “Unorthodox Jukebox” has sold 1.8 million copies. “Bruno did well in touring and I think longevity does really well for him. His songs stuck around on multiple formats all year round,” Billboard editorial director Bill Werde told Reuters.
After all the hard work and sacrifice, Mar is living out his dream. “[N]ow is the fun time,” he observes. “My dream was to not get a day job but to sleep, wake up and do my music. And hopefully, my music does all the talking. I want to keep that dream forever. That's it. That's what I love to do.”
Fans can look forward to seeing more of Mars in 2014. He has several touring dates, and is slated to headline the Super Bowl half time show in February.
