On Tuesday former California state senator and California Republican Party chairman candidate Jim Brulte presented his vision for the Republican Party at a luncheon hosted by the San Bernardino County Federation of Republican Women. Brulte stressed that Republicans need to work together as a cohesive party, rather than resort to the infighting of recent years such as between the Tea Party and moderate Republicans.
“It’s all too easy after a defeat to look around and blame a member of our own family. . . . We all got beat. We all have to work together to win. And we can win.”
Continuing with that theme and in reference to former President Ronald Reagan’s “Eleventh Commandment” and a Biblical parable in Matthew, Brulte suggested, “We ought to commit ourselves to the next two years to focus on winning elections and not spending as much time focusing on the specks in Republicans’ eyes because I’ll tell you most Democrats in this state have whole forests growing out of their faces.”
He also feels that every race in California is important from water board to governor. “Republicans officials need to go into every community. There are communities we are not going into and we are ceding whole communities to Democrats. That’s on us.”
Brulte touted his plan for a Republican elected official organization. He said there are hundreds of African American, Hispanic and Asian Republicans already elected to public office around the state. He wants to give them the tools to network, perform outreach and be part of the face of the Republican Party rather than allowing Democrats and the media to paint the party as an exclusive party consisting of white males.
Brulte was asked about the California Republican Party not supporting some Republican campaigns. He explained that it is a matter of finances. “I believe if we are going to be successful we have to be ruthless and cold and calculating in deciding where we spend our money.”
“I have no interest in giving some candidate money to take them from 38 to 41 percent. I want to make sure we spend our money taking people from 48 to 51 percent,” he continued.
Brulte suggested that Republicans should not be allowing Democrats to define the Republican Party. “I think we win elections by focusing on issues that unite Republicans and divide Democrats.”
Brulte is expected to win chairmanship. The election will take place at the CRP Spring Conference in Sacramento which begins tomorrow and runs through Sunday.
