A fire that ripped through a brownstone in a Boston neighborhood claimed the lives of two firefighters, councilor Josh Zakim confirmed. The Boston Globe reported the sad news on March 26 that the nine-alarm blaze broke out on Wednesday afternoon in the city’s Back Bay area.

Officials announced the names of the two firefighters at a news conference as Lt. Edward J. Walsh, 43, and Firefighter Michael Kennedy, 33. Both men were considered heroes trying to do their jobs as they were trained to do.

“Today’s a sad day in the history of the Boston Fire Department,” Fire Commissioner John Hasson said. “Our hearts go out to the families. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them.”

The blaze began around 3 p.m. as heavy smoke and flames were seen filling the four-story brownstone quickly. Strong winds were also a problem.

A total of 18 people were taken to area hospitals, according to EMS spokesman Nick Martin. He said that there was no word yet on whether they were civilians or firefighters, or what their current conditions are.The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

According to the Boston Globe, the last time a Boston firefighter lost his life in the line of duty was back in 2009. Fire Lieutenant Kevin M. Kelley died when his Ladder 26 truck crashed into a building after the brakes failed.

Condolences go out to the families of these two Boston heroes.
