Brooklyn animal cruelty arrests made by Humane Law Enforcement of ASPCA

The Humane Law Enforcement agents of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) announced on Friday two arrests in Brooklyn animal cruelty cases. The owners have been charged with abuse and neglect of their small dogs.

On Thursday, Alex Dykes, 49, of Flatbush was charged with one felony count and one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty. His one-year-old shih tzu named Bentley was brought into the Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital with a fractured jaw and skull. Authorities allege Dykes beat the dog with such force causing the fractures, trauma, and brain hemorrhage.

Another painful case of animal neglect with a six-year-old chihuahua named Vampiro surfaced earlier in February when New York City Animal Care and Control in Brooklyn gained custody of the severely neglected and malnourished dog after he was abandoned in a local pet store. The dog was owned by Venus Laventure, 50, of East New York who adopted the dog in 2006.

Vampiro was brought in blind, malnourished, dehydrated and was suffering from a severe skin infection because of his severe neglect.

Owners could face up to two years in prison.

Bentley is currently in foster care. Vampiro will soon be available for adoption.

If you see animal cruelty or neglect, please report the case to the nearest animal control facility or the police. Bentley and Vampiro are safe today because people cared, and the ASPCA continues to fight for their lives.
