The Western Michigan University hockey team is heading to Soldier Field for its second outdoor game in as many seasons.
The Broncos are going to play Miami University on Feb. 7 in the Hockey City Classic as part of a doubleheader, according to Crain's Business Chicago. Also playing in the event will be the University of Michigan and Michigan State University.
Western Michigan had a great run in outdoor games last season, taking part in the Great Lakes Invitational. The Broncos played two games at Comerica Park, beating Michigan 3-2 and Michigan Tech 1-0 to win the GLI.
The Broncos were also a perfect 4-0 against Miami last season. Western Michigan beat the RedHawks 5-4 and 3-2 at Lawson Arena before downing Miami 5-2 and 3-2 in Oxford, Ohio.
Currently, WMU has not made an official announcement about participating in the game, but has an open date on February 7. According to the Broncos current schedule, they will play host to Miami the weekend before the event, on January 30-31, 2015.
Michigan and Michigan State will play in the other half of the doubleheader. The two Big Ten schools also competed in the GLI last season, with Michigan State beating Michigan 3-0 in the consolation game.
The Hockey City Classic, which is managed by Intersport, is bringing the event back to Soldier Field after playing it at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis last season.
The Broncos start their 2014-15 season with an exhibition game against the University of Toronto on Oct. 4. Western Michigan starts the regular season on Oct. 10, when it plays at Canisius College.
