Sunday, May 16 at 4:30pm Shirley Hall will read her poetry at the GoKaly Women's event being held at Agora Coffee in the Fontana Shopping Center here in Tulsa.
Hall recently won first place in a national contest sponsored by The Writer's Place. The poem that earned her this honor is titled "The Vote." It demonstrates how practicing civic responsiblity does not always protect you from being marginalized anyway.
Hall has had two books of her poetry published. The first is titled One Day: Life, Love and Controversy in Middle America. In One Day, Hall establishes herself as a voice for the middle class through her poetry.
Her second book of poems came out last fall and is titled Listen. Listen is a first person journey into the poignant lives of those who fail to flourish in today's society.
In an online interview with Flexwriter, Hall states, "My poetry is a teaching tool. It forces mankind to confront the consequences resulting from their decisions. To face the snubbed realities of today’s “everyman”.
Hall credits William Shakespeare, Karl Marx, Khalil Gibran, Edgar Allen Poe, James Baldwin, Alice Walker and Ernest Hemingway as being her poetic teachers.
An advocate for peace, freedom and equality, Hall challenges social, economical, religious and political agendas through controversial poetry and essays. Hall has presented her poems in colleges, universities, social and professional venues. A diversified writer, widely read poet and noted public speaker, her controversial bodies of work are read and appreciated worldwide.
