Tim Shaefer's first point and click adventure delivered a pair of huge reveals on the VGX live stream Saturday evening. Both that the first half of the game is coming in January, and a surprise cast announcement.
Elijah Wood joins the cast of the revival adventure game, revealed via a developer diary styled video that shows not only the new cast addition but some new gameplay. Wood voices the character of Shay, the lone survivor aboard an incubator vessel called the "Bassa Nostra" which served as Shay's escape pod when his world was dying. The ship takes care of Shay, while having a type of shady ulterior motive, lying to Shay. Shay says in the gameplay trailer,
I've also discovered it's lying to me, sheltering me from the conflicts raging throughout the galaxy, the injustices out there that I could be fighting.
In addition to Shay, players can switch to Vella, who was selected by her town to be honored by being devoured by a monster. Vella decides against this fate, and vows to defeat the monster and run away from her town.
During a gameplay demo, Shaefer showed that the return to roots is certainly present, as players will need to use inventory items to solve puzzles, and exploration is key. The game is to be "as big as the old games" which Schaefer explained as brimming with characters, fun levels, and challenging puzzles.
Broken Age's art style is sure to captivate, as the gameplay is also something that may bridge gaps, inciting nostalgia in older gamers, and draw new players to the classic adventure genre.
Broken Age is set to release in January of 2014 for PC, Mac, and Linux, with no official word yet to a console release. One thing is certain, Broken Age will have a lot to deliver on come January, or else, as Shay says in the trailer it may become "time for a mutiny."
