On Friday December 30th, Brock Lesnar announced his retirement after losing to Alistair Overeem in the main event on UFC 141. Lesnar, still under contract with the UFC, has been rumored to make a return to the WWE. However, Lesnar did leave the UFC with a parting gift. According to a Saturday January 7th report by The Wrestling Observer, Lesnar helped rake in an estimated 750,000 to 800,000 PPV buys for UFC 141. UFC is already considering these early estimates as a huge win.
For a Friday PPV, UFC is ecstatic over the early numbers. Lesnar has been the top PPV draw for UFC since his arrival and leaves the company as their most successful PPV attraction. Despite his fight record, Lesnar was a huge success for UFC at the gate and on PPV. He made the promotion a lot of money and brought in a legion of new fans.
There's a possibility that UFC President Dana White will let Lesnar out of his contract. Perhaps, these PPV numbers will be the deciding factor. Brock had an elite ground game due to his wrestling background. Unfortunately, he could never develop a standup game to match. However, Lesnar did accomplish more in a short time than just about any fighter before him.
