Broadway is buzzing with the news that Bette Midler is coming back to perform on the Great White Way. The Grammy/Golden Globe/Emmy/Tony Award winner will open on April 24th in a one person show called “I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers.” Theater and ticket information will be announced at a future time.
Ms. Midler, also known as The Divine Miss M, got her start on Broadway in the late 1960’s when she played in the smash hit show “Fiddler on the Roof.” She followed that up when she performed in the show “Salvation.” A few years later, she sang in “Clams on the Half Shell Revue” for which she received a special Tony Award in 1974 for her contribution to Broadway. Most recently, she was an active producer of the Broadway show “Priscilla Queen of the Desert.”
In this new play by John Logan, Ms. Midler will play the legendary Hollywood agent Sue Mengers (1932-2011). The story is being presented as: “The chain-smoking, unapologetically brash Mengers was an icon among the New Hollywood set. In a male-dominated time and profession, she became the first female ‘super agent,’ representing the likes of Nick Nolte, Burt Reynolds, Candice Bergen, Ryan O'Neal, Steve McQueen and Barbra Streisand. She rose up the Hollywood ranks despite modest beginnings as a refugee from Nazi Germany. In addition to her professional achievements, her dinner parties were legendary and a ticket to a Mengers' gathering was considered a sign that a new talent had arrived.”
