From Friday April 12, until Sunday, April 14, 2013, figure skaters who once skated and trained at the famous Broadmoor World Arena have planned a reunion.
The former Broadmoor World Arena, which was torn down in 1994, was the original place that made Colorado an ice skating mecca. Many, many figure skaters trained at the Broadmoor World Arena in fact.
Some figure skaters trained at the Broadmoor World Arena year-round while other skaters have wonderful memories of spending their summers there. Skaters lived in Beatty Hall, which was a dorm on the Broadmoor Hotel grounds especially for figure skaters. In the summer and at Christmas time, elaborate ice shows took place. Broadmoor World Arena's skaters who became gold medalists were given the honor of swimming at the Broadmoor Hotel's pool.
Elite Broadmoor World Arena's skaters, including Peggy Fleming and Tim Wood, went on to win medals at National, Olympic, and World figure skating events. The wonderful tradition of training figure skating champions continues today at the Colorado Springs World Arena Ice Hall.
