Britney Spears opens two-year gig in Vegas to luke-warm reviews

After months of living in the Nev. desert getting ready for her headlining show in Las Vegas, a section of the world famous Vegas strip shut down briefly on Dec. 27 as “Toxic” pop princess Britney Spears pulled up in her convertible at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino to herald the opening of her two-year residency.

Her first show at Planet Hollywood was a mild success, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

The audience stayed on its feet for the entire 90 minute show, dancing to airbrushed versions of the 32-year-old Spears' top hits, including "Toxic" and "I'm A Slave 4 U."

The young-for-Vegas crowd was there for the spectacle, which included acrobatics, a ring of fire, confetti, and a frequently airborne Spears.

The Los Angeles Times was less kind:

Singing -- well, sort of -- for what appeared to be a full house at the 4,600-seat Axis Theater, Spears led a show, called “Piece of Me,” that married the elaborate razzle-dazzle of old-school Las Vegas entertainment with the jackhammering beats of today’s electronic dance music. It was loud, it was colorful, it was over in less than 90 minutes.

Spears joins the likes Celine Dion, Elton John, and Elvis in calling Vegas home for an extended stay. She’s contracted to perform at least 100 shows through 2014 and 2015, “with the possibility of adding more gigs if the production takes off.”

Selena Gomez, Adam Lambert, Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus were among the celebrities attending Britney’s “A Piece of Me” opening at Planet Hollywood.

Some in the audience say that they could tell that Spears was doing a little lip syncing during the show.

A spokesperson for Planet Hollywood confirmed that the "Oops!... I Did It Again" singer is incorporating pre-recorded vocals to supplement her live singing voice “to help her through the more physically grueling parts of the show.” The pre-taped vocals are also used to add some audio special effects to the show, including providing a more electronic quality to the singer’s vocals.

With most live concerts, audience members are always quick to mention some of their favorite songs that didn't get performed.

Taking that one step further, Brit was criticized further by the L.A. Times for incorporating some of her worst songs for her opening night.

… the show also reaches back for a handful of duds -- “Boys,” “3,” “Do Somethin’” -- any of which might have been replaced with superior cuts from her recent albums. There’s no “Radar” here, no “Hold It Against Me,” and, perhaps most tragically, no “If U Seek Amy,” if u can believe it.
