Britney Spears lip-synched her way through the opening nights of her new “Piece of Me” show in Las Vegas, according to a report yesterday at LAist. Britney has long been known to rely heavily on prerecorded vocals and lip-synching on her tours. The pop star's management was forced to promise live vocals for ‘Piece of Me’ earlier this year. Spears was supposedly working with a vocal coach in preparation for her Vegas residency, but it is unknown when plans for her to actually sing live were abandoned.
“Piece of Me” includes lip-synched performances of 21 of Britney’s biggest hits and videos of the numbers can be easily found on YouTube. Sadly it does not appear as if the pop star sings a single song live and almost all of the numbers seem to use unchanged album versions of her songs.
One can give Britney props for at least seeming to finally master mouthing the words as she lip-synchs, which is a vast improvement over her previous efforts. The same cannot be said of her choreography in the show. It is hard to imagine it took a professional choreographer to come up with intricate dance moves like pretending to drink every time the prerecorded vocals say martini or making a driving motion with one’s hands when the prerecorded vocals mention a car.
Britney Spears’ manager has not responded to media inquiries regarding his promise that Britney would be singing live. One should note that Planet Hollywood is billing “Piece of Me” as a show and not as a concert.
Tickets for Britney Spears’ “Piece of Me” show in Las Vegas are still available.
