With the release of a new single “Work B**ch,” today celebrates the release of Britney Spears’ first single “…Baby One More Time” 15 years ago. Since the debut in 1998 the popstar went on to claim worldwide fame and one tough following.
“…Baby One More” was released September 30, 1998 but didn’t hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 until January 1999 after debuting at No. 17 in November of ‘98 and was originally intended for R&B group TLC. The title track to her debut album is her longest running single on the chart lasting 32 weeks total. The Catholic school girl video helped propel her into stardom and was a major impact on pop music in the late 90s that would shift it to the more simple bubblegum pop.
The song helped Swedish music producer Max Martin strike gold. He submitted eight songs in total to the debut album and three of them became singles including the title track and “(You Drive Me) Crazy.” He’s gone on to write with and produce songs for P!nk, Katy Perry, Backstreet Boys and nailed it with Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” a co-write with Dr. Luke with Kelly’s vision of bringing more guitars into the song.
Spears’ album …Baby One More Time is her most successful album being certified 14x platinum by the RIAA for shipments over 12 million in the U.S. The album has sold over 30 million copies worldwide making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. Spending 51 weeks in the top ten on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and was the fourteenth album in the U.S. to sell over 10 million copies since Billboard began tracking sales with Nielsen SoundScan in 1991.
It’s every artist’s dream to win the most prestigious award in music, the Grammy. …Baby One More Time earned Spears’ two nominations for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She would lose the Grammy to Sarah McLaughlin’s “I Will Remember You.” To date, Spears has only earned one Grammy--”Toxic” won in 2005 for Best Dance Recording.
Since then, Britney Spears has gone on to record seven more albums with the eighth in the works. The new single was released September 16 and the upcoming album will hit stores December 3, 2013.
