On Sept. 13, 2013, ABC's "Good Morning America" revealed that Britney Spears is scheduled to make a big announcement on the show on Sept. 17, 2013. The announcement is expected to be the details about her Las Vegas concert residency, which is at Planet Hollywood, according to the Las Vegas Sun.
Meanwhile, on Sept. 10, 2013, Spears announced on her official Internet outlets (website, Facebook, Twitter) that "Work Bitch" is the first single from her eighth studio album, whose title and release date are to be announced.
Spears tweeted: "Work Bitch is going to premiere WORLDWIDE this Monday, Sept 16th at 6pm ET. You can listen on @iHeartRadio or your local radio station. Work Bitch will be available on @iTunesMusic that night at 12:01am ET, Sept 17th... are u ready?! #YouBettaWorkB #1Week."
As previously reported, Spears revealed a few details about her eighth studio album, which she's recording with Will.i.am and other producers. On July 3, 2013, she tweeted: "Really excited 2 give u a taste of my new album... can't wait 2 share what I've been working on. Going to be my most personal album ever :)."
It is reportedly the last album that she owes on her Sony Music contract. There will no doubt be a bidding war among major labels to sign Spears after her Sony Music contract ends. We'll have to see if she renews her contract with Sony or if she signs with a competing record company. Spears' most recent album of new material was 2011's "Femme Fatale."
Spears' song "Ooh La La" from "The Smurfs 2" soundtrack bombed when it was released in July 2013. The song peaked at No. 54 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the song failed to crack the Top 40 in most other countries. Spears had much more success as a featured artist on the Will.i.am song "Scream & Shout," which was a Top 10 hit in many countries in 2012.
Spears is also a featured artist on the Miley Cyrus song :“SMS (Bangerz)," which is on Cyrus' 2013 album "Bangerz."
In an interview in Shape magazine's June 2013 issue, Spears confirmed that she's been in talks to headline a residency at a major Las Vegas hotel/casino, which she did not name. No deal has been announced yet.
Spears lasted just one season on "The X Factor" U.S in 2012, when the show lost millions of viewers after she joined the judging panel. (According to the Nielsen Company, "The X Factor" U.S. had an average of 12 million U.S. viewers per episode in 2011. In 2012, after Spears joined the show, that number dropped to 8 million U.S viewers per episode.)
She left "The X Factor" after getting a lot of criticism from viewers, who often called her a "dull" or "robotic" judge. In 2012, she was No. 6 on Forbes magazine's list of the World's Most Powerful Celebrities. In 2013, Spears didn't even rank on the list.
Her residency in Las Vegas is expected to gross between $70 million to $90 million in its first year, so Spears' salary portion from that amount could put her back on the Forbes list in 2014.
Sept. 17, 2013 update: As expected, Spears was on "Good Morning America" to announce details about her Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood. She has signed a two-year, 50-concert deal for the show, which is titled "Britney: Piece of Me" and will begin on Dec. 27, 2013. In her "Good Morning America" announcement, Spears commented on her Vegas show "We wanted the environment to be that way so people could come and have a good time and stand up and feel like they're in the show with me. I love Vegas. The energy here is really, really good."
According to "Good Morning America," the announcement included a live helicopter stunt in the Las Vegas desert, where Spears was surprised by more than 1,000 of her fans dressed schoolgirl outfits similar to what she wore in her "... Baby One More Time" music video.
Spears also revealed on "Good Morning America" that her eighth studio album is scheduled for release on Dec. 8, 2013. The album's title and track listing are to be announced.
Spears' salary for the Las Vegas residency is $15 million a year, according to TMZ. She was also reportedly paid $15 million to be a judge on "The X Factor" U.S.
Sept. 25, 2013: TMZ reports that as of Sept. 25, 2013, Spears' Las Vegas shows are nearly sold out. For the first 16 shows that went on sale, 70,242 of 73,600 tickets have been sold. Most of the remaining tickets are for seats that are the farthest from the stage.
