British tourist banned from entering Sri Lanka for buddha tattoo

A British tourist was barred from entering Sri Lanka because of a tattoo on his arm depicting Buddha. The incident happened at Bandaranaike International Airport on Friday as the man attempted to enter the country. According to the authorities when questioned about the tattoo, the man made several disrespectful remarks about the religion and Buddha.

Sri Lanka is a predominately Buddhist country, and takes their religion very seriously. Any showing of disrespect to the religion can hold criminal consequences or denial of entry to the country. One official stated that the barring of the Brit was also looking out for his own safety, as making such remarks could but him in danger once he was in the country. There is no word at this time if further legal action is being taken.
