Pirate Speedway in San Bernardino hosted the British Style Team Racing New Year’s Cup. Which is essentially team racing. The race was run by Steve Evans of Elite Speedway Events.
The racing consisted of heats in the following classes:
Divisions 1, 2 and 3.
Juniors in the 250 and 150 class
And there were a few young racers in the Pee-Wee class competing.
In case you have never seen a Speedway Racing Motorcycle it has a single cylinder engine usually a Jawa brand engine, lightweight frame and wheels and no brakes.
Racers start out in what are called heats races consisting of a few laps, it goes very fast, the winners of the heats then move onto the ‘Main” the big race at the end of the program the winner of the Main is the big winner.
There were six teams competing they were the Vikings, Eagles, Rebels, Stars, Aces and Pirates.
The first heats of the day were the Vikings versus the Eagles, then Rebels versus the Stars and then the Aces against the Pirates.
The racing was very fast and close and the teams were going at it, there were no points being given for this race just the Trophy and bragging rights.
The various classes competed in their heats and the teams went back and forth in wins and the Eagles ended with the Eagles getting the Trophy.
If you would like to see some Speedway race bikes there is Open Practice at the track on Sunday January 19, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Pirate Speedway is located at 930 S. Arrowhead in San Bernardino, just above Central.
They have a very active facebook page and you can find their website here www.piratespeedway.com
