British stars take part in prostrate cancer charity ride promotion

Comedian Stephen Fry and singer Alexandra Burke are among British celebrities throwing their weight into promoting prostrate cancer awareness. Several papers, including The South Yorkshire Times and Goole News, reported August 31 that Burke and Fry have spoken out in support of The Prostate Cancer Charity’s Tour Rides, a series of charity rides that takes the arduous route of Tour of Britain stages. They join their voices with official ambassadors such as pro cyclist Bradley Wiggins CBE and other interested celebrities -- rugby star Chris Cusiter lost his father to the disease in 2010.

The Prostate Cancer Charity’s Tour Rides seek to raise both money and awareness of prostrate cancer and fitness. According to The South Yorkshire Times, Stephen Fry, who more recently got involved in post-riot cleanup efforts, pointed out that men often don't pay enough attention to their health.

The five bicycle rides take place from July through September, with events starting in London, Bury St Edmunds, Welshpool, Bury St. Edmunds and Peebles. Two events are already finished but the 2012 prostrate cancer rides are already being planned and it's still not too late to join the London, Scotland and Stoke-on-Trent prostrate cancer rides.

All three celebrities have spoken out about the importance of the rides and the challenges they provide. Ms. Burke, X-Factor winner, even tweeted to her followers in aid of the prostrate cancer cause. The event was launched in 2008 and last year attracted more than 4,500 participants. In 2011, the event went from three to five stages and, according to project leader Katie Robbins, will likely continue to grow.

According to the charity, prostrate cancer, when caught early, is curable. It's also the most common cancer among men.
