British loan aircraft from British Petroleum to evacuate employees from Libya

The plane with 71 BP employees landed at Britains Gatwick Airport.

The aircraft was loaned by the British government from a charter fleet leased by British Petroleum Company.

Passengers arriving at Gatwick were relieved to be home as they described the scenes they had in Libya as hellish.

Helena Sheehan said she had just experienced, "some of the worst hours of her life, Libya is descending into hell. The airport is like nothing I've ever seen in my whole life. It's absolute chaos. There's just thousands and thousands of people trying to get out."

"We are talking about additional planes landing but can not give anymore information due to operational reasons," added a spokesman.

The British Foreign Office said it was hoping to charter "a number of additional planes" to Libya to ensure all stranded Britons can be brought back to the mainland safely.
