NICK ROSS ORCHESTRA
Nick Ross' "big band" orchestra continues to celebrate the great swing era of the 1940s playing throughout England. This week they will be playing on September 12th at 7:30 pm at the West Cliff Theatre, Clacton.
Two notable dates in the English Midlands in the next few months... from Stokeon- Trent (9/19) to Tamworth (12/6).
The Nick Ross Orchestra will be recalling memories of Blitz-period London with their one-off performance, The Sounds of the Glenn Miller Era, at the Victoria Hall in Bagnall Street, Stoke, on Saturday, September 19.
Their second Midlands performance, The Sounds of the Glenn Miller Era — In the Christmas Mood, takes place at the Assembly Rooms in Corporation Street, Tamworth, on Sunday, December 6.
Featuring a full line-up of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a rhythm section and headed by top singers Matthew Ford and Alice Coulam, the band seeks to recreate the sound of such great jazz musicians as Glenn Miller as well as Artie Shaw, Count Basie, Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey and Syd Lawrence.
They will be playing a series of 1940s jazz hits including numbers such as Moonlight Serenade, In the Mood, Little Brown Jug, Begin the Beguine and Blue Moon in a tour that marks the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of World War Two.
Band Leader Nick Ross, born in 1961, said: “I am often asked what kindled my interest in the big band sound. The obvious answer would be the wonderful music of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie and Ted Heath.
“But given that I wasn’t around in the 1940s, the first big band that I actually heard live was at the Syd Lawrence Orchestra — and by my early teens, I was hooked.” The performance in Stoke begins at 7.30pm and tickets and more information are available by calling the box office on 08448 717649, or at www.ambassadortickets.com/Victoria-Hall.
