Bangor-- Ben Mazzone hit a single that scored Andrew Owsianko in the bottom of the eight inning to give Edgewood L.L., from Bristol, Connecticut a 1-0 victory over Emilia L.L., from Emilia, Italy in a Senior League World Series game played at Mansfield stadium on Monday morning.

"I started off the at bat 0-2. I fought off two curve balls and two fastballs.towards the end of the at bat, I was kind of locked in because there had been so many pitches in the at bat.,"Mazzone said. "He gave me a fastball right down the middle."

The game looked like it would be going to the ninth inning, as Matteo Friggeri retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the eighth inning. Owsianko drew a walk, Brad Burney followed with a single to centerfield to set up the dramatics from Mazzone.

"We had opportunities the whole game, we just couldn't cash In. The last at bat was a good at bat,"Bristol's manager Mke Ziogas said. "I didn't care where that ball was, I was sending that kid. I am going to make him throw us out there."

The game was able to go to extra innings because of the pitching performance from Burney. He threw a complete game four hitter, allowing only one walk, and striking out four.

Burney needed to make quick work of Emilia in the eighth inning. His pitch count was at 87 going into the eighth inning. Senior league rules prohibit pitchers to go over 95 pitches. Burney retired the side in order, including only throwing four pitches to the final two batters.

"He (Burney) goes eight pitches in that inning to get three outs,"Ziogas said. "I walk to the huddle and say this kid just pitched his heart put, I say we need to get him a win right here, he deserves the win. All the guys rallied around him."

Burney retired 12 straight hitters after allowing a single and a walk in the first inning. He allowed two hits in the fifth inning and a single during the seventh inning.

"The curve-ball was working well,"Burney said. "My arm slot was off the first couple innings, it was a little wild. I found it."

Emilia starting pitcher Michele Pomponi was cruising through the Bristol lineup. He allowed only four hits and struck out six in his 5.2 innings on the mound. Manager Stefamp Chiuri decided to remove Pomponi at the under 61 pitch mark. That will make Pomponi eligible to pitch again in pool play, as he needs to days of rest, which would make him available for Emilia on Thursday.

"There starting pitcher was on it. After three, he was averaging like 11 pitches per inning, he threw strikes,"Ziogas said. "He pitched a great game, painted the corners, in and out, unbelievable."

Burney and Joe Dorsio had two hits each for Bristol. Both teams played flawless defense.

Bristol (1-1) will play Willemstad, Curacao on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Emilia (0-1) will play Houston, Texas on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
