People love their pets and often try to find different ways to include their pets in fun outings. With dogs, that's usually on a leash at a park or one of Lynchburg's walking trails.
Any time you are on the Blackwater Creek Bikeway or at James River Heritage Trail at Percival's Island, you see dogs on leashes walking their people.
Lynchburg has been raising money to build an off-leash dog park. Dogs love to run free but there aren't any places that they are permitted to do so in Lynchburg.
The Bark for Your Park effort of last summer raised some money but not enough to make Lynchburg's dog park a reality. The fundraising continues.
The site of Lynchburg's dog park is already set at the Blackwater Creek Recreation Area, located off Monticello Avenue near Lynchburg College. You can see the potential of the site, a nice clearing with grass and shade trees.
For now, Lynchburg dog lovers often use the ball fields at Peaks View Park as an off-leash park. The paw prints are visible all through the red clay on the field.
There are off-leash dog parks an hour to the south in Danville and an hour to the west in Roanoke.
Roanoke's Highland Dog Park opened in May 2009 and stays busy. Highland Dog Park is located at 5th Street SW and Washington Avenue SW in Roanoke.
Danville's Coates Bark Park will hold their grand opening in spring. There are a few finishing touches left on the park but it's already in use. The park is located at the Coates Recreation Center, 1725 Westover Avenue.
But some pet owners find other ways to bring their pets along when they go out for the day. This examiner captured some interesting ways to bring pets along on outings.
One dog owner at Altavista's Trade Lot brought his dog in a baby stroller. It's clear this wasn't the first stroller outing and the dog sat up nicely on the ride.
One cat mom invested in a specialty cat stroller to bring her cat along on a walk at the Blackwater Creek Bikeway. The cat was happy and enjoyed the ride.
One ferret owner regularly walks his female ferret on a leash and harness at Peaks View Park. Trial and error has taught him to use both to avoid his ferret wiggling out of the leash.
Where there's a will, there's a way and Lynchburg pet lovers continue to show that they will find a way to bring their best friend along.
