Bringing the homeless "Home"

See also

This month, just like last month, I picked up my homeless friends from their undisclosed location in Cincinnati to attend the free community dinner at Shiloh UMC located at Foley and Anderson Ferry.

Since I was picking them up from work, I wasn't quite sure of the timing, and as I was turning onto Rapid Run, realized that we were early. Since Teresa has been to my house to help me clean, I told them since we were a tad early, we'd stop at my house first to hang out. I had worn my uniform to work and decided to change clothes also to fit in a little better.

Teresa never feels awkward at my house, but I always do, and it was the first time Lee had been there. I wondered what goes through their minds - do they compare their camp with my cottage? Do they see all the things in my house and think I live in excess?

I had been with Teresa also on Wednesday night as she has been working with me on a project at the house, and I had Tenth Avenue North playing in the car during our drive. I had seen their concert at the Underground last Saturday night, and was still overwhelmed, even though it wasn't my first concert experience with them. But their new album, with the raw, honest lyrics have really been speaking to me. This week, with everything happening in my life, track 3 was pretty much on repeat.

As it played, over again, I noticed Teresa trying to sing along with the words. And I was suddenly struck by the amazingness of it. The song fit her life perfectly. If she listened to the words, it was a song we can all share. The lyrics are:

There's a girl in the corner
With tear stains on her eyes
From the places she's wandered
And the shame she can't hide

She says, "How did I get here?
I'm not who I once was.
And I'm crippled by the fear
That I've fallen too far to love"

But don't you know who you are,
What's been done for you?
Yeah don't you know who you are?

You are more than the choices that you've made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You've been remade.

Well she tries to believe it
That she's been given new life
But she can't shake the feeling
That it's not true tonight

She knows all the answers
And she's rehearsed all the lines
And so she'll try to do better
But then she's too weak to try

But don't you know who you are?

You are more than the choices that you've made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You've been remade.

'Cause this is not about what you've done,
But what's been done for you.
This is not about where you've been,
But where your brokenness brings you to

This is not about what you feel,
But what He felt to forgive you,
And what He felt to make you loved.

You are more than the choices that you've made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You've been remade.

You've been remade
You've been remade.
You've been remade.
You've been remade.

I'm still getting to know Teresa's story, and I want to walk softly and share Christ with her as I feel she's ready.
But this was a great way to introduce her to the knowledge that yeah,
we make bad choices,
we make mistakes,
things in our past damage us,
but we don't have to stay there.
Because of what Christ did for us on the Cross, we can be remade.

I want to not only bring Teresa home with me, I want to lead her Home - to know she can have an eternal Home with a Father and Brother that can't wait to lavish love on someone who has known so much apathy and hate.

We can be remade and go Home.
