Critchley's complaint about the report is the narrative that Kelly had a relationship with a member of Christie's inner circle, and without directly saying so, implied that was the reason for the George Washington Bridge (GWB) lane closure scandal
The report released concluded Governor Chris Christie and other members of his staff played had "no" role in the toll lane closures that caused massive gridlock on the world’s busiest bridge, the George Washington Bridge, from Sept. 9-13. The report also pointed the finger for the GWB lane closure scandal on Critchley's client, Bridget Anne Kelly, the embattled former aide and deputy chief-of-staff to Gov. Chris Christie.
Critchley has slammed an internal review of the controversy as "venomous," "gratuitous" and most of all, "sexist." Critchley issued a statement about the report that faulted Kelly in large part for the allegedly politically motivated closure of lanes near the George Washington Bridge last September, which resulted in massive traffic jams.
In addition to slamming Kelly, the report also absolved Christie of wrongdoing, described Kelly as "emotional" and noted her brief "relationship" with Bill Stepien, the Republican governor’s former campaign manager. Christie dismissed both in January as documents came to light linking them to the scandal.
"The report’s venomous, gratuitous, and inappropriate sexist remarks concerning Ms. Kelly have no place in what is alleged to be a professional and independent report," the statement said. "A preemptive strike to isolate Ms. Kelly and impugn her credibility is not surprising."
The statement continued: "Ms. Kelly is not a liar. She is a single mother of four children who was deeply devoted and committed to her job at the Office of the Governor. She worked tirelessly to pursue the goals of the Office during her tenure."
Stepien also commented through his lawyer, who blasted the report, charging that "a gratuitous reference to Mr. Stepien’s brief dating relationship with Bridget Anne Kelly — which began after he left the Governor’s office, ended before the lane closure debacle began, at took place at a time when both he and Ms. Kelly were single — is a regrettable distraction that has no place in this report."
Kelly's lawyer pointed out that there will be a U.S. attorney report, and that is the only "the only credible investigation."
